Whitetailed Deer Relief Wood Carving - "Checkin' His Backtrail"

Process:

This is an original relief wood carving that I designed and carved in my studio. I carved everything by hand with power tools from one piece of kiln dried Pine wood.

On this carving, most of the coloring and shading on the Whitetail Deer and trees is burned on by hand. I then hand painted on my own brown, white, and gray custom mixed stains to highlight the deer and trees.

The back of the carving is flat for wall mounting, and I carved a recessed flush mount hanger for a nail or screw head. I also hand engraved my signature and the year on the back.

Preservation:

This carving gets three coats of quality finish. After burning all of the details, the wood is sealed with shellac, and then I hand paint stains, and finally brush on a coat of exterior grade U.V. resistant Spar Urethane with a "satin" sheen. This wood carving is however intended for indoor use. If you want to place it outdoors, I recommend brushing on a few more coats of Spar Urethane/Varnish.
